The Colt Python Is Back!

The Colt Python Is Back!

Big News from Colt with the re-introduction of the .357 Magnum Python revolver!

After years of hoping, Colt officially announced they are bringing back the legendary .357 Magnum Python for 2020. The Colt Python became famous among serious shooters for its fit, finish and smooth action. It was called "the finest production revolver ever made" by many professionals including Jeff Cooper. Introduced in 1955 it immediately became a hit with anyone who appreciated precision. Colt’s flagship revolver was quickly embraced by LE officers as well and it became standard issue for the Colorado State Patrol, Georgia State Patrol, Florida Highway Patrol and other agencies. The reason for the Python’s success was simple, it was a revolver which felt great in the hand, was very easy to shoot well due to its exception trigger pull, very good sights, with just enough weight to help reduce recoil.

Blessed with handsome lines, the Python was a revolver many lusted after, but could not obtain. Used examples became prohibitively expensive once Colt stopped production in 1999 and the Colt Custom Shop ceased assembling them in 2005. Now Colt has reintroduced perhaps the two most popular models, with either a 4.25 inch or 6 inch barrel. Both are built from stainless steel and feature 6-shot cylinders. A lot has changed when it comes to manufacturing since 1955, and Colt has taken the opportunity to make some improvements to the design. The guns are now built from stronger and more durable stainless steel alloys. The rear sight was redesigned to provide a 30% increase in the cross-sectional area of the top strap to further strengthen the design.

Colt Python
Youcan choose a new Colt Python with either a 4.25 or a 6-inch barrel, both arestainless steel and blued is not currently an option.

What about the famous Colt Python trigger? Colt tweaked this as well. They simplified the mechanism and reduced the amount of parts in the trigger action. They claim this elevates its reliability and allows for more straightforward maintenance. Colt says their testing process during development of the new Python included over 40,000 trigger pulls on a single specimen. Trigger pull scans show lighter trigger pull weights, less friction and increased consistency. Trigger pull is listed as 7 to 9.5 pounds max.

Chambering is, as you would expect, the original .357 Magnum, although you can shoot .38 Specials as well if you'd like. The barrel features a recessed target crown to enhance accuracy. Classic looking but updated walnut stocks are standard. A fully adjustable rear sight, user-interchangeable front sight and that eye-catching full underlug make for a practical field gun. I suppose the biggest surprise is the price. The MSRP is only $1,499! Its obvious Colt is getting serious about their revolver line. Re-introducing the Python is a big step which has obviously been in the works for some time now. I look forward to having the chance to handle and test-fire a new Colt Python, so watch the pages of Firearms News for a full review.
