NICS checks for January gun sales were down a bit from December’s record total, but were still up 94.4% from January 2012, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation. NSSF reports an adjusted total of 1,790,154 checks during the month. NSSF applies a coefficient to the total NICS checks to account for certain state uses of the NICS system that aren’t related to a gun purchase.
It was unsurprising that numbers went down in January, both because December totals include Christmas buying and because retailers all over the country are just out of guns. There are plenty of would-be buyers, but supplies are short in many locations, proving again that the current occupant of the White House remains the world’s greatest gun salesman
