Congressman Robert “Beto” O’Rourke (D-TX) finally admits what many gun owners have been fearing for years: AR15 owners who refuse to turn in their firearms will get a visit from the police.
This fact game to light after Beto was questioned by Joe Scarborough of MSNBC during the CNN town hall on LGBTQ issues in LA last Wendsday. Scarborough asked O’Rourke’s what his plans to curb gun violence in the US were, and received the following response.
“I think just as in any law that is not followed or flagrantly abused there have to be consequences or else there is no respect for the law… there would be a visit by law enforcement to recover that firearm and make sure that it is purchased, bought back, so that it cannot be potentially used against somebody else.”

What Bob O'Rourke fails to mention, is two fold: what the further consequences of resisting confiscation would be, and what impact this defacto confiscation would have - not to mention how he would measure said impact.
But in many ways, Republicans and Second Amendment supporters should be happy this is the case. O’Rourke is the only plausible Democratic presidential candidate foolish enough to reveal how his party truly feels about gun ownership. The rest of the dems play it coy, pretending that they only want to take certain firearms.

But just as France, Poland, the UK and several other countries learned half a century ago, appeasement only buys you time. The slippery slope fallacy is only a fallacy if it isn’t demonstrably true. And if the continual erosion of the Second Amendment is any indication (and it absolutely is) we as Americans will only continue to see our rights, liberties and freedoms abrade, shrink and eventually vanish should we capitulate on any issue.
