At the Range: Krebs Custom OP-14
October 02, 2014
Built for and distributed exclusively through Circle 10 AK, Inc., the new Krebs Custom OP-14 offers remarkable modularity from an AK variant.
The OP-14 begins life as an Izhmash Saiga IZ-132 in 7.62x39mm before receiving a complete makeover. The rifle gets a new Krebs Custom trigger group with a 3.1-pound break and crisp reset that leaves you wanting the same trigger in every semiauto rifle you own. Krebs also modifies the retaining plate and bullet guide, and adds their UFM KeyMod rail system for mounting attachments. The rifle also includes an Enhanced Safety Selector and a KrebsKote finish, before tuning the action until it's smooth as butter.
Most notably, the OP-14 incorporates a proprietary Krebs Custom hinged top cover with a rail for mounting optics. The Krinkov-style hinged top cover is custom-fitted to every rifle, creating a rock-solid mounting platform that doesn't affect the zero of your optic. In fact, Krebs is not offering the hinged top cover as an accessory due to the amount of hand fitting required to install properly and provide a stable platform. During range testing, neither the included Magpul MBUS sights nor the aftermarket Mepro 21 shifted during repeated firing or after raising and lowering the top cover.
The OP-14 also features a VLTOR AK collapsible stock adapter, enabling the rifle to come with an M4-style Magpul CTR stock and a cheek riser. The rifle also comes with a Magpul MOE pistol grip and 30-round PMAG.
A 16.25-inch chrome-lined barrel with a pinned and welded SRVV AKM muzzle brake result in an overall length of 33.75-inches with the stock fully collapsed. The overall weight for the OP-14 is 8 pounds unloaded.
The new Krebs Custom OP-14 is available exclusively through Circle 10 AK for $1,999. Though the cost may deter the average shooter, this is an excellent package for enthusiasts and collectors with attention to detail and an eye for style.
